You have made the decision to tour a potential childcare center for your child. What do you look for? How do I know that this site meets the expectations on my list? First and foremost, trust your instincts and first impressions! Many of us know when we walk into a situation that makes us feel uncomfortable. Looking for a place to leave your child each and every day is hard. If you have any uneasy feelings about where you are, then chances are this will not be the place for you. Upon entering, where you greeted in a professional way? Did this greeting make you feel that you were welcome? Again, that first impression will be a lasting one.
You are now ready to enter the classroom that your child will be spending their days. What is your immediate thought? Be sure to write this down on your list that you have brought with you. Take a look around the room. Does the classroom environment seem welcoming and kid friendly? Are the children currently in the room engaged in activities that are appropriate for their age? For instance, you would want to see children in a 4-5 year old classroom with options such as writing utensils, imaginative play items, and books for reading available. The classroom environment should be one that encourages the children to learn through play! As you entered the classroom, where you introduced to the teacher that will be with your child? This first interaction between the teacher and your child will set the tone for their abilities to interact in the future. Of course, some children do have a tendency to be shy at first. You will know best what your child's reaction is. Be sure to talk with them about it also. Children are very good judge of characters. At this time, while your child is exploring the classroom environment, it would be great to speak with the director regarding the questions on your list. Be sure to ask all the questions you have listed. Even if they now seem to be silly, you put them down because they were important to you! As you are observing the environment, ask any questions that come to your mind. You should never feel rushed while touring, this is an important step in making your decision.
After you have toured the classroom and any other areas of the facility where your child will be, be sure to confirm availability and rate information. Don't be afraid to ask if there are any special offers available with enrollment! Many places will ask you at the end of the tour when you want to start. At this time, if you are unsure, let them know that you will call them in a few days with your decision. You should never feel pressured into making a decision that is not 100% what you are wanting.
